Home Testing for Sleep Apnea

ExpressMED/BOAC is excited to announce that we now offer home sleep testing that is reliable, portable and user-friendly. Obstructive Sleep Apnea [OSA] is a common sleep disease afflicting at least 25 million adults in the United States. Patients with OSA are at a significantly higher risk for developing hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, obesity and sudden death.

The gold standard and most common modality for achieving a diagnosis of OSA has traditionally been the in-lab polysomnogram [PSG]. Yet, home sleep testing equipment and methodologies have been shown to be of comparable efficacy and offered at a much lower cost.

What are the benefits of Home Sleep Testing?
The patient self-administers the home sleep test and is able to spend the night in their own bed; in familiar surroundings [reducing the first night effect].

Home sleep testing is beneficial for those who have trouble arranging time out of their schedules to spend the night in-lab and/or want quick and easy access to testing.

The cost of a home sleep test is only a fraction of what would be paid for an in-lab sleep study, and yields comparable results in the diagnosis of OSA.

What should you expect at the time of your appointment?

If the provider believes you may be at risk of OSA, an evaluation using the STOP BANG questionnaire will be completed. This tool, used extensively in research, has been found to be sensitive and reliable for identifying individuals with this potentially life threatening condition. This questionnaire records any medical conditions the employee may have such as diabetes or high blood pressure. It evaluates the patient’s level of sleepiness, and measures body mass index (BMI), neck circumference, and airway anatomy.

If the provider determines that the employee is at a moderate or high risk of OSA after conducting the initial evaluation, they will be offered in-home sleep testing. The patient will be given instruction on the use of the sleep testing equipment and sent home for testing that evening. They are required to return the following day before Noon with the equipment where data is downloaded and sent to certified sleep specialist Dr. Marjorie Stock for interpretation.

If treatment is needed, the employee will be referred to Dr. Marjorie Stock or sleep specialist of patient’s choice for further consultation and follow-up. Patients may take their results back to their PCP or other specialty provider if they choose.

ExpressMED/BOAC has been approved by the major health insurers to perform home sleep testing as a covered benefit for its members. Self-pay pricing is also available at a significant discount for patients who are without insurance or prefer to pay out of pocket.
